Akpabio Alleges Tinubu’s Opponents Are Sponsoring Insecurity to Undermine Democracy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that individuals opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration are sponsoring insecurity across Nigeria in an effort to undermine the country’s democratic system.

Akpabio made the remarks on June 13 in Abuja during the public presentation of three books in honour of former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar as part of his 84th birthday celebration. One of the books presented was Abubakar’s autobiography.

Speaking at the event, Akpabio praised Abubakar’s role in Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule in 1999 and assured him that the current administration and security agencies are working to address the nation’s security challenges.

“Today, many are sponsoring insecurity in our country, to paint our democracy in a bad colour,” Akpabio said. He added that security personnel remain committed to overcoming the threat and expressed confidence that terrorism and poverty would be defeated.

The Senate President also noted that members of the National Assembly are beneficiaries of the democratic foundation laid by Abubakar and said his contributions to the country would not be forgotten.

Akpabio’s comments come amid ongoing security concerns across several parts of Nigeria, including attacks by armed groups, kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements. The violence has affected communities in states such as Benue, Plateau, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno, among others.

According to previous reports by Amnesty International and SBM Intelligence, thousands of people have been killed or abducted in attacks across the country in recent years, while many communities have been displaced due to insecurity.
