Suspended Edo LG Chairmen Challenge Okpebholo, Insist on Remaining in Office

The 18 local government chairmen and their vice chairmen in Edo State, suspended by the State House of Assembly for alleged gross misconduct, have declared their intention to continue their duties until their tenure ends in September 2026.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Dcn Newman Ugiagbe, chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council, stated that the suspensions are unconstitutional and void. He cited a court judgment affirming their three-year tenure, which began on September 4, 2023, as guaranteed by the Edo State Local Government Law and the Nigerian Constitution.
The chairmen have taken legal action, serving notices of judgment and securing an interim court order restraining the state government and House of Assembly from interfering with their administration.
Ugiagbe referenced a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits state governors and assemblies from dissolving or meddling in local government affairs, emphasizing that the Assembly’s action, based on Governor Monday Okpebholo’s request, is unlawful and in contempt of court.
The chairmen vowed to continue their constitutional responsibilities as the chief executives of their councils despite the suspension.
