FG Approves N70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers for Six Months

The Federal Government has approved a N70,000 transport allowance for workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, to ease the impact of economic hardship.

According to The Sun, the approval was among the resolutions reached at a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

The resolutions were signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; NLC President, Joe Ajaero; Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu; and other government and labour representatives.

The meeting also agreed that payment of peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, would commence in November and be made in three equal monthly instalments.

The government further agreed to settle 19 months of outstanding allowances owed to health workers within three months, beginning in December 2026.

On the national minimum wage, both parties agreed to constitute the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee and begin meetings immediately, although they disagreed on the implementation date.

The demand for tax relief for workers will be referred to the National Economic Council (NEC) for consideration, as taxation falls within its statutory responsibilities.

Regarding hazard allowances for agricultural officers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has submitted the list of beneficiaries and associated costs to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) for verification. The process is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The NSIWC also pledged to complete the cost assessment for adjustments to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) within three weeks, enabling the Presidential Committee on Salaries to make a decision.

The Federal Government and the NLC urged state and local governments to participate in the intervention measures and encouraged labour unions to pursue their implementation.

Both parties are expected to reconvene in one month to assess progress on the agreed resolutions.
