Former President Muhammadu Buhari to Be Buried Today in Daura

Katsina — The state funeral for former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held today, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. The ceremony is expected to be attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, senior government officials, foreign diplomats, and political leaders from across Nigeria and abroad.
Buhari died on Sunday at a hospital in London after a prolonged illness. His passing has sparked a nationwide period of mourning, with tributes pouring in from across political, religious, and ethnic groups.
In a condolence message, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” praising his “deep commitment to the unity and progress” of Nigeria.
Born in December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was a Fulani Muslim and a retired major general. He first seized power in a 1983 military coup and was overthrown in 1985. After transitioning to democratic politics, he ran unsuccessfully for president three times before winning the 2015 election. He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.
Buhari was widely known for his anti-corruption efforts and his administration’s response to the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria. He also held previous positions as military governor of Borno State and as Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
He received military training in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, India, and the United States. Buhari was married twice and had ten children.
Security officials and protocol teams are in place to ensure a smooth burial ceremony, which will be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites. The event will be broadcast live on national and international media platforms.
