UEL Standings and Analysis After Manchester United’s Key Win to Strengthen Qualification Chances
Rasmus Hojlund’s decisive impact off the bench helped Manchester United secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in their UEFA Europa League matchup, as the Red Devils overturned a deficit to boost their qualification hopes.
Despite controlling possession, United struggled to break down Plzen in a lackluster first half. Bruno Fernandes had a notable attempt with a powerful strike from outside the box, but opportunities remained limited.
The match took a dramatic turn early in the second half, when goalkeeper Andre Onana’s mistake handed Plzen an unexpected lead. Onana’s errant pass inside his own box allowed Matej Vydra to seize the opportunity, slotting the ball into an open net.
United manager Ruben Amorim made key substitutions that shifted the momentum in his team’s favor.
Rasmus Hojlund, one of the changes, equalized in the 62nd minute with a goal from a deflected cross by Amad Diallo. The goal ignited United’s offense, and they continued to press for a winner.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 88th minute when Hojlund scored the decisive goal, finishing off a well-executed free-kick routine.
The win improved United’s position in the group stage, bringing them closer to a top-eight finish.
Up next, United face their city rivals, Premier League champions Manchester City, in a much-anticipated league clash on Sunday.
