Thomas Tuchel Clarifies Ben White’s England Call-Up Situation
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has dismissed claims that Ben White rejected an opportunity to rejoin the national team. The Arsenal defender has been absent from international duty since leaving England’s squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Tuchel confirmed that White is eager to make his return but suggested that the timing is not yet right due to his recovery from injury. “Ben White didn’t refuse the call, he loves to be back in the squad,” Tuchel stated on Friday after announcing his squad, which includes Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, and Reece James. “I just think it’s a bit too early now for him given the seriousness of his injury. I’m delighted he’s back. We’re monitoring his progress. Thanks to everyone at Arsenal.”
Tuchel’s comments contrast with a statement made by former England manager Gareth Southgate in March 2024. At the time, Southgate mentioned that FA technical director John McDermott had been informed by then-Arsenal sporting director Edu that White did not wish to be considered for selection.
Since taking charge of England, Tuchel has made efforts to reconnect with White, previously stating in December that he would “reach out” to the defender. Now, with White open to a return, his future involvement with the Three Lions will likely depend on his fitness and form.
