Obi Mikel Praises Liverpool’s Gravenberch as an Underrated Talent
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has hailed Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, calling him a highly underrated player who deserves more recognition.
Speaking on his podcast, Mikel expressed admiration for Gravenberch’s performances under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot. The Dutch midfielder struggled in his first season under Jürgen Klopp but has flourished this campaign after transitioning into a defensive midfield role. Now playing as a number six, he has become a key figure in breaking up play and driving the team forward.
Mikel, who played in a similar role for Chelsea, compared Gravenberch to Manchester City’s Rodri, emphasizing how defensive midfielders often go unnoticed despite their crucial contributions. He noted that Liverpool’s failure to sign a defensive midfielder last summer forced Slot to rely on Gravenberch, who has since excelled alongside Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.
As Liverpool continues to compete for trophies, Mikel believes Gravenberch’s performances will eventually earn him the recognition he deserves.
