“Evra Criticizes Pep Guardiola: ‘He Killed Football, Now We Have Robots'”
Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra recently shared strong opinions about Pep Guardiola’s impact on modern football. During a discussion with Rio Ferdinand, Evra criticized Guardiola’s tactical methods, arguing that they have diminished creativity and individuality in the sport. His comments were shared in a post by Fabrizio Romano on Facebook, where Evra did not hold back.
Evra’s main criticism was that there are no longer “geniuses” in football, with Guardiola’s style focusing more on organized play than on individual expression. “Pep Guardiola killed football! Now we have robots,” Evra remarked. He pointed out that the game has shifted from a more free-flowing and creative style to something more mechanical and structured.
Reflecting on the past, Evra expressed regret over the disappearance of players with distinctive flair, such as the legendary Ronaldinho. “You will never see a player like Ronaldinho again,” he said. For Evra, players like Ronaldinho embodied a time when football was about artistry and imagination rather than rigid tactical systems.Guardiola’s tactical philosophy, known as “positional play,” focuses on maintaining team structure, ball possession, and precise positioning.
This approach has been highly successful for him at clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. However, some fans and former players believe that it stifles individual creativity and natural talent. This isn’t the first time Evra has criticized Guardiola. In previous interviews, he has suggested that Guardiola’s tactics don’t encourage players to express their personal flair. His latest comments have ignited a debate about whether modern football has lost its magic and individuality, and whether there’s still room for a more expressive style of play in the future.
