CAF Requests Clarification from Libya and Nigeria on AFCON Qualifier Cancellation

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has asked the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to submit documentation explaining the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier between Libya and Nigeria.

The match, which was supposed to take place on October 15, was abruptly canceled following a series of chaotic events involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles.Libya’s media outlet, Libya Al-Ahrar Channel, reported that CAF has given both football federations a deadline of October 20 to submit the required documents.

Nasser Al-Suwaie, Secretary-General of the LFF, stated that they have hired a lawyer to defend Libya’s position in the case. He hinted at possible collusion involving some CAF officials but emphasized that the Libyan Federation stands firm in its stance.Al-Suwaie clarified that the decision to redirect the Nigerian team’s flight to Al-Abraq Airport, which was far from their intended destination, was made by Libyan authorities and not by the LFF.

He also stressed the importance of respecting Libya’s sovereignty and distanced the football federation from any accusations of wrongdoing. The Super Eagles were reportedly stranded at Al-Abraq Airport for over 18 hours, during which they were deprived of basic necessities such as food, water, and internet access. Citing safety concerns and the prolonged delay, the Nigerian team ultimately withdrew from the match to protect their players and staff.

CAF’s involvement aims to shed light on the events that led to the match’s cancellation, raising concerns about the safety and logistical management of AFCON qualifiers. As the deadline approaches, both the Libyan and Nigerian football associations will need to provide clear evidence detailing their involvement in the situation.
