Sowore Slams Labour Party: “They Grab Power, Collect the Booty Bag, and Return to APC”
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has taken aim at Nigeria’s opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party (LP), accusing it of lacking genuine opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In comments reported by Punch on Sunday, June 15, 2025, Sowore labeled the Labour Party as the weakest among opposition groups, claiming many of its members only joined the party for personal gain rather than out of any ideological commitment. He alleged that most of these politicians originally belonged to either the APC or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and only defected to LP temporarily to win elections.
“That’s why I refer to the Labour Party as a short rental,” Sowore said. “Most of them that went to Labour Party saw an opportunity. They were coming from either PDP or APC. They walked in there, grabbed power, and then the moment they had the booty bag, they went back to where they’re coming from.”
According to Sowore, this pattern of political opportunism undermines the credibility of the opposition and weakens democracy. He argued that switching parties purely for electoral advantage — only to return to the same establishment circles — shows a lack of true reformist agenda.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over political loyalty and the sustainability of opposition movements in Nigeria’s political system.
