Gumi Supports Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills Despite Opposition from Northern Leaders
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic scholar, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, despite opposition from some northern leaders.
Gumi described the bills as beneficial for Nigerians, stating that he had carefully studied the draft documents before giving his endorsement.
President Tinubu has maintained that the four bills are designed to simplify tax administration, alleviate the burden on low-income earners, and eliminate double taxation and excessive levies. The president also stated that the reforms will foster a fairer and more inclusive tax system, reduce Nigeria’s reliance on oil revenue, and support local economic activities.
However, some northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders have opposed the proposed legislation, arguing that its implementation could deepen poverty in the region. Gumi suggested that the Value Added Tax component requires adjustment to address concerns that have been expressed across the country.
Gumi’s endorsement has added a significant voice to the debate over the proposed reforms. His support came after he had reportedly carefully studied the draft documents, an action that many of the politicians from the north opposed to the bill admitted they had not taken.
The proposed tax reform bills have been a topic of discussion in Nigeria, with some experts arguing that they could help to increase government revenue and reduce poverty. Gumi’s support for the bills is seen as a significant development, as it adds a prominent voice to the debate and could help to build momentum for the proposed reforms
