Gov Makinde Declares Rivers State Emergency Illegal, Calls for Resistance
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it illegal and unacceptable.
Despite the House of Representatives and Senate ratifying the decision on Thursday, Makinde insists the move violates Nigeria’s democratic principles and must be challenged.
In a statement titled “Stand Up, Even If You Are Alone,” Makinde criticized the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly, calling for resistance from right-thinking citizens.
“This is why I stand today (Thursday) to say that the declaration of the State of Emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of government by the presidency is an illegality that right-thinking members of society must oppose,” he said.
A known ally of Nyesom Wike and a member of the G5, Makinde praised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Governors’ Forum for taking legal action against the federal government’s decision.
He emphasized the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic values, stating:
“Our democratic tenets must never be trifled with, no matter our personal feelings and loyalties. This is the time to take a stand for fairness, equity, and justice. And I am glad that our great party, the PDP, is demonstrating the needed strength and leadership.”
He further revealed that the PDP Governors’ Forum had unanimously agreed to challenge President Tinubu’s actions in court, vowing not to allow Nigeria’s democracy to be undermined.
