DSS Detains Two Lagos Lawmakers Amid Turmoil Over Obasa’s Impeachment
The political turmoil in the Lagos State House of Assembly escalated on Thursday, with the Department of State Services (DSS) detaining Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe 2) and Hon. Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island 2) in connection with the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
The two lawmakers were reportedly arrested for allegedly storming the Clerk’s office to seize the legislative mace, the symbol of authority used in removing Obasa from office.
The arrest sparked further tension, leading a group of about 20 lawmakers to march to the DSS office in Shangisha on Thursday, demanding the immediate release of their detained colleagues. However, security operatives prevented journalists from entering the premises, heightening the mystery surrounding the arrests.
While Afinni was released on health grounds, Ogunkelu remained in detention as of the latest update.
Obasa, who was ousted on January 13, 2024, while in the United States, faced allegations of gross misconduct. Despite his removal, Obasa made a defiant return to Lagos last Saturday, rallying his supporters and insisting that he was still the legitimate Speaker. However, the lawmakers stood firm, affirming the finality of his impeachment.
In Obasa’s absence, Mojisola Meranda was swiftly installed as the new Speaker.
The unfolding events have drawn in security agencies, but the crisis within the Lagos Assembly shows no sign of resolution as tensions continue to rise.
