Makinde Says Abducted Oyo Students, Teachers Still Held Within Old Oyo National Park Axis

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that students and teachers abducted on May 15, 2026, in Oriire Local Government Area remain within the Old Oyo National Park axis as security agencies continue efforts to secure their release.
In Newsletter No. 140 released on June 12, Makinde said intelligence reports indicate that the victims are still being held within the expansive national park area, which covers approximately 2,500 square kilometres across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State.
The governor explained that the size of the park, its dense vegetation, and difficult terrain have complicated rescue operations. He noted that multiple security formations are conducting coordinated, intelligence-driven operations within and around the forest reserve to locate the abductors and rescue the victims.
According to Makinde, the state government and security agencies remain committed to securing the safe release of the abductees. He stated that all available resources have been deployed and that every credible lead is being pursued.
“Intelligence reports indicate that the victims are still being held within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis,” the governor said, adding that the terrain requires “patience, strategic coordination, and sustained efforts” to ensure a successful rescue operation.
Makinde urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615. He also cautioned against spreading unverified information, warning that misinformation could undermine ongoing rescue efforts.
The governor reaffirmed his confidence in the operation, stating that efforts to bring the abducted students and teachers home safely are continuing.
