Introducing the World’s Shortest Tribe: Adults Who Resemble 10-Year-Old Children

Four groups of Ituri Pygmies, collectively known as the Bambuti, inhabit the Ituri Forest in Eastern Congo (Kinshasa). Their average height is less than 4 feet 6 inches (137 cm).On average, Pygmies stand under five feet tall, being only 35 percent shorter than the general population.
Studies indicate that their short stature is genetic rather than a result of malnutrition.Researchers have dedicated years to understanding why the Pygmies are the shortest ethnic group in Africa.Various theories have been proposed to explain their small size.
Traditionally, it was believed that their height is due to their lifestyle in dense forests and their low-calorie diet. However, some studies suggest that their height might be linked to their adaptation to the low levels of UV radiation found in rainforests. This adaptation may lead to lower vitamin D production in their skin, which in turn affects calcium absorption from their diet, limiting bone growth.
The Bambuti call themselves “bamiki bandura,” meaning “children of the forest,” as they rely on the forest for their survival. They view the forest as a nurturing deity deserving of love and respect. They build homes using wrapped phrynium leaves and do not have a formal leadership structure like chiefs or elders.
Instead, they resolve disputes through communal discussions.Throughout history, the Bambuti have faced severe hardships, including cannibalism and enslavement by neighboring Bantu communities. During the Congo war and the Rwandan genocide, over 20,000 Pygmies lost their lives.
