Olubankole Wellington, professionally known as Banky W (also credited as Banky Wellington), is a Nigerian-American singer, songwriter, rapper, actor, entrepreneur, politician, and record executive. He was born on March 27, 1981, in New York City, United States, to Nigerian parents. He spent part of his childhood in Lagos before returning to the United States, where he earned a degree in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
While studying in the United States, Banky W founded Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) in 2002, which later became one of Nigeria’s most influential record labels after relocating its operations to Lagos. Under E.M.E, he played a pivotal role in launching the careers of artists including Wizkid, Skales, Niyola, and Shaydee.
As a recording artist, Banky W gained prominence with albums such as Back in the Building, Mr. Capable, The W Experience, R&BW, and Songs About U. He is widely recognized for hit songs including Ebute Metta, Lagos Party, Yes/No, Strong Ting, and Made for You. Beyond music, he has established a successful acting career with notable roles in The Wedding Party, The Wedding Party 2, Up North, and Sugar Rush.
In 2018, E.M.E transitioned from a traditional record label into a full-service entertainment, talent management, and media company. Outside entertainment, Banky W has been active in Nigerian politics, contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2019 and 2023 general elections. He is married to Nigerian actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, and together they have two children.
