Mohamed Salah Admits Fear of Returning to Liverpool After Jota’s Tragic Death
Mohamed Salah has expressed deep sorrow and shock following the heartbreaking death of his Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, revealing that the tragedy has left him “frightened” to return to the club.
As reported by Vanguard on Friday, July 4, 2025, Salah broke his silence after Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, were killed in a car crash in Spain. The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when their vehicle veered off the motorway and caught fire, claiming both of their lives instantly.
The news has devastated the Liverpool squad and sent ripples through the global football community.
In an emotional Instagram post, Salah — the Premier League’s top scorer last season — shared his grief:
“I am truly lost for words,” he wrote. “Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break.”
His heartfelt message echoed the sorrow felt throughout the team. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed his devastation, calling the loss “absolutely devastating and in total disbelief,” and described Jota’s death as one that leaves “an unfillable void” within the team.
New Liverpool manager Arne Slot released a club statement urging unity during this painful time.
“We owe it to Diogo to stand together and be there for one another,” Slot said, acknowledging the emotional weight the tragedy has placed on the team. He also confirmed that the club would delay the return of some players for pre-season training to allow them space to grieve.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, quickly became a fan favorite, admired for his clinical finishing and relentless energy. He was just 28 years old.
Liverpool has announced plans to honour Jota during their opening game of the new season. The club also committed to supporting his family during this difficult period, ensuring they remain connected to the Liverpool community.
As tributes continue to pour in from around the world, the club and its fans are united in mourning a player whose impact went far beyond the pitch.
