La Liga Standings After Saturday’s Matches: Barcelona Drops Vital Points in Title Race

Alexander Sørloth’s dramatic injury-time strike sealed a stunning comeback for Atletico Madrid, toppling Barcelona to claim the La Liga summit.
Barcelona had taken control in the first half, with Pedri combining brilliantly with Gavi to fire a low shot past Jan Oblak in the 30th minute. Despite their early dominance, the hosts failed to capitalise on numerous opportunities.
Atletico pounced in the second half. Rodrigo De Paul leveled the match in the 60th minute, punishing a costly mistake from Marc Casado with a thunderous finish.
The decisive blow came deep into stoppage time when Sørloth met Nahuel Molina’s pinpoint cross, smashing the ball into the net and securing Atletico’s 12th consecutive victory across all competitions.
La Liga table after these results
Barcelona has dropped crucial points in the title race. This win ensures Atletico end 2024 as La Liga leaders, three points clear of Barcelona, who have played an extra game. To add to Barca’s woes, Real Madrid could push them down to third with a win over Sevilla on Sunday.
