Imo Ikenga: Igbo Man Is in Lagos Prison for Saying ‘Stop Killing Our People’
A recent video on Symfoni TV, Imo Ikenga Ugochinyere, a federal lawmaker from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), voiced strong criticism over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite multiple court orders for his release. Ugochinyere suggested that Kanu’s extended imprisonment appears influenced by ethnic bias, noting that his Igbo heritage could be a factor in his lack of a fair trial. “There’s no trial, so why is he still in detention? Because he’s an Igbo man, that’s why,” Ugochinyere asserted.
The lawmaker also highlighted the case of an Igbo traditional ruler imprisoned in Lagos after speaking out against attacks on Igbo businesses and the killing of Igbo people. According to Ugochinyere, the traditional ruler was arrested for calling on the Igbo community to defend their rights, emphasizing the constitutional right to protect their lives and property.
Ugochinyere’s statements reflect a broader concern about the systemic marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria and a perceived inequality in the country’s justice system. He called for reforms to address these biases, arguing that selective justice undermines the rights and freedoms of the Igbo ethnic group. His comments underline the need for a more inclusive approach to governance and justice in Nigeria, aiming for a fairer system that respects constitutional rights across all ethnic groups.
