Nigerian Army Reports 44 Soldiers Missing Following Deployment Against Boko Haram in Borno
In a significant development in Nigeria’s military operations, the Nigerian Army has issued a notice declaring 44 soldiers as wanted for desertion. These soldiers failed to report for their assignment against Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.According to reports from Sahara Reporters, these soldiers were part of the 403 Amphibious Brigade stationed in Baga, under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Sector 3, Nigeria.
They were expected to return to duty by October 31, 2024, but as of November 1, they had not reported back, leading military authorities to issue a nationwide directive to locate and apprehend them.To reinforce discipline, the Nigerian Army has also frozen the bank accounts of these absent soldiers. This measure aims to deter desertion and ensure accountability within the ranks. The Army’s statement emphasizes that the soldiers in question were stationed in Baga, a critical area in northeastern Borno State that continues to experience significant Boko Haram activity.
This region has long faced logistical and security difficulties, often necessitating additional military support and coordination with international forces to combat terrorist threats.
