Catholics and PFN Praise Pastor Enoch Adeboye for Apologizing Over Tithe Payment Teachings
According to Vanguard, Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s recent apology regarding his teachings on tithing has garnered praise from prominent religious groups, including the Catholic Church and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). These groups have commended Adeboye for acknowledging his earlier mistakes and embracing a more accurate interpretation of biblical principles. >
Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, Director of Social Communications for the Lagos Catholic Archdiocese, lauded Adeboye’s retraction, stating that it aligns more closely with Catholic doctrine. He praised Adeboye’s humility in admitting his error, quoting John 8:32: “The truth will set you free.” Godonu further emphasized that the Catholic Church does not teach that financial contributions like tithing determine one’s salvation. Instead, the focus is on following Jesus Christ and living according to God’s will.
Similarly, Bishop Abraham Olaleye, former Vice Chairman of the PFN, acknowledged the significance of Adeboye’s apology. He emphasized that the pastor’s willingness to admit his previous misunderstanding of tithing is a positive development. Olaleye pointed out that Christians live under the dispensation of grace, as taught in John 3:16, and warned against introducing new doctrines that deviate from biblical teachings. >
He also explained that tithing was a practice rooted in the Old Testament for the Israelites, and many of these ancient laws are not applicable to modern-day Christians. Olaleye concluded by stating that while anyone can misinterpret scripture, Adeboye’s acknowledgment of his mistake is an encouraging sign, especially given his large influence.
