Dr. Daniel Olukoya Explains: ‘Why Did Lazarus Fall Sick Despite Being Jesus’ Friend?’
Dr. Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries, addressed a profound question during the January 2025 edition of Power Must Change Hands. Speaking on the topic “The Master Is Come,” Olukoya delved into the story of Lazarus, whom the Bible describes as a close friend of Jesus, yet was struck by illness.
This raised a crucial question: If Lazarus was a friend of Jesus, why then was he sick?
Dr. Olukoya used this biblical scenario to highlight a critical lesson. He emphasized that the presence of the Lord does not exempt anyone from life’s challenges. “Every man has a battle to fight,” he explained, noting that storms are inevitable in life, and they respect no one. The storm, he said, is a universal experience. “When problems arise, some people break down, while others break records.”
The sermon also touched on the difference between sickness and death. Olukoya reminded the congregation that sickness, while not equivalent to death, can lead to it if not addressed. He pointed out that there are both physical and spiritual sicknesses.
“Your pride may be your sickness, but you may excuse that pride as a slight stomach disorder that will soon go away,” he said. Similarly, anger, bad speech, and unforgiveness can manifest as spiritual sicknesses, which, if neglected, may grow into more serious problems.
Dr. Olukoya stressed that ignoring even small physical or spiritual sicknesses can ultimately lead to death, underscoring the importance of seeking healing and deliverance promptly.
