Van Dijk Snubs Richarlison’s Handshake, Leaves Him Embarrassed as Liverpool Crush Spurs
Liverpool’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Tottenham Hotspur wasn’t just about the goals—it also delivered a moment of humiliation for Spurs forward Richarlison, courtesy of Virgil van Dijk.
During the game, the Liverpool captain and the Brazilian forward clashed in a physical battle for the ball. Van Dijk, known for his dominant defending, used his strength to send Richarlison to the ground. The challenge was reviewed by VAR and deemed fair, allowing play to continue.
Later in the first half, after another collision, Van Dijk extended his hand towards Richarlison, seemingly offering to help him up. But just as Richarlison reached out, Van Dijk pulled his hand away and jogged off, leaving the Spurs striker hanging. The cheeky move didn’t go unnoticed, as fans on social media quickly reacted.
One fan tweeted, “Van Dijk’s absolutely done Richarlison,” while another said, “Van Dijk clowning Richarlison is absolutely brilliant.”
The night got worse for Richarlison as he was forced off at halftime due to injury. He was replaced by Mathys Tel, making his Tottenham debut. Meanwhile, Liverpool dominated, controlling 73% possession and firing 11 shots to Spurs’ one in the first half. Cody Gakpo had already put Liverpool ahead in the 34th minute, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1.
Liverpool continued their dominance, adding three more goals to seal a 4-0 win on the night and a 4-1 aggregate victory, booking their spot in the Carabao Cup final.
The match also saw controversy, with Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall escaping a second yellow card after fouling Kostas Tsimikas. The decision infuriated Liverpool’s bench, leading to a yellow card for assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff, while Van Dijk also confronted the officials after the final whistle.
Despite the heated moments, Van Dijk’s handshake snub remains a standout highlight, adding a humorous twist to an intense encounter. Liverpool will now turn their focus to the final, while Tottenham must recover from a bruising defeat.
