Real Madrid Eye Chelsea Star Enzo Fernandez Amid Midfield Reshuffle
Real Madrid are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their midfield ahead of the upcoming season, particularly in light of Toni Kroos’ retirement and uncertainty surrounding Luka Modric’s future. While Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi are on their radar, a new target has emerged: Chelsea’s World Cup-winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
According to the Daily Mail, Madrid’s interest in Fernandez dates back to his early days at River Plate and continued during his time at Benfica. The Argentine star eventually joined Chelsea in January 2023 for a record-breaking £106 million transfer fee. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Fernandez has proven his value with his adaptability in both defensive and attacking midfield roles. His leadership has also grown, occasionally stepping in as captain when Reece James is unavailable.
Despite Real Madrid’s admiration, Chelsea have no plans to part ways with the 24-year-old. The London club sees Fernandez as a cornerstone of their midfield project, especially paired with Moises Caicedo, for whom they collectively spent over £220 million. Fernandez is tied to Chelsea on a long-term deal that runs until 2032, giving the club significant leverage in any potential negotiations.
Given Chelsea’s firm stance, a transfer this summer appears unlikely unless there is a drastic shift in the club’s approach.
