Gernot Rohr: Ademola Lookman Deserves the African Player of the Year Award.
Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has expressed confidence that Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman deserves to win the CAF African Player of the Year Award.
Lookman, who was named among the final nominees for the prestigious award, has had an exceptional year for both club and country. The 27-year-old scored three goals and provided one assist in seven appearances for the Super Eagles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. He also made history by scoring a hat-trick for Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final.
This season, Lookman has been in outstanding form, contributing 11 goals and five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.
Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles, praised Lookman for his impressive growth. Speaking to Foot Africa, he stated, “He has made a lot of progress. His difficult first seasons in England and Germany are now a thing of the past. He has managed to get back up and shine.” Rohr further highlighted how Lookman has evolved into a complete player, excelling both as a goal scorer and an assister.
