Tensions Rise in Delta APC as Oborevwori, Okowa Allies Struggle With Registration After PDP Defection

A wave of tension has swept through the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and several of their loyalists from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to NaijaNews, many of the defectors are encountering stiff resistance during the APC registration process, primarily due to their failure to formally resign from the PDP.
Grassroots APC ward leaders have refused to enroll the defectors into the party, demanding resignation letters from the PDP as proof of commitment before allowing their registration. This requirement has stalled the integration of many of the newcomers, leaving them in political limbo and sparking internal discord within the APC.
In an effort to calm the brewing crisis, APC state leadership stepped in. Valentine Onojeghuo, the APC’s state publicity secretary, directed all ward and local government chairmen to stop insisting on resignation letters and to register the defectors immediately. He emphasized the need to eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks and foster unity.
While the APC works to ease the tension, the PDP appears to be regrouping. Loyalists who remained in the party are holding strategy meetings to rebuild and strengthen their base. Despite the defections, the PDP faction seems determined to reassert its influence.
Within the APC, however, unease persists. Long-time party members are skeptical about fully embracing the new entrants, fearing hidden agendas or future instability. This has created a fragile political atmosphere, with both camps cautiously navigating an uncertain alliance.
