“I Have Never Smoked or Taken Alcohol in My Life” – Rotimi Amaechi Shares Healthy Lifestyle Habits Ahead of 60th Birthday

As he nears his 60th birthday, former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up about his long-standing commitment to a healthy lifestyle, stressing that discipline has always guided his personal choices.
In an interview reported by The Sun, Amaechi revealed that he has never engaged in smoking or drinking alcohol at any point in his life. His lifestyle, he said, has always been centered around health-conscious decisions and avoiding harmful habits.
“I have never smoked in my life, I have never taken alcohol in my life,” Amaechi said, proudly highlighting choices that many may find surprising in the context of political and public life.
As he looks forward to the milestone birthday, Amaechi shared that he doesn’t have any major lifestyle changes planned—because he has already made several significant adjustments over the years. He mentioned cutting out sugar entirely from his diet, including eliminating carbonated drinks and even packaged fruit juices marketed as natural.
“The only things I have dropped and I didn’t have to wait for my 60th birthday to drop them is that I have stopped taking sugar. So, no more carbonated drinks, no more even all these things you call natural juice, no sugar,” he explained.
In addition to reducing sugar intake, he’s also overhauled his carbohydrate consumption. Once known for his love of eba, a popular Nigerian dish made from cassava flour, Amaechi admitted he used to eat it up to three times a day. Now, it’s completely off his plate.
“I have dropped carbohydrates, so I no longer eat eba. If not, I used to eat eba three times a day. I have dropped that,” he added.
Amaechi’s comments reflect a broader personal commitment to health and wellness, with changes made not for show or celebration, but as part of a lifestyle he’s cultivated over time.
