Governor Okpehbolo Orders Probe into DSS Assault on Journalists at Edo Election Tribunal
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpehbolo, has called for an investigation into allegations that a Department of State Services (DSS) official assaulted journalists covering the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal at the High Court in Benin.
This was disclosed in a press release by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon.
The NUJ lauded Governor Okpehbolo for his swift intervention, emphasizing that his prompt response demonstrates a commitment to protecting the rights and safety of media professionals.
The governor has reportedly instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate the allegations, sending a clear message that attacks on journalists will not be condoned in Edo State. The NUJ also urged stakeholders to collaborate with the governor to promote respect for journalists and their work.
Expressing gratitude, the NUJ commended Okpehbolo for his proactive approach, stating that it aligns with democratic values and reinforces the rule of law. The union also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding journalists’ rights and fostering a safe environment for media operations in the state.
The NUJ pledged its support for the governor’s ongoing efforts to ensure a media-friendly environment in Edo State, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in creating a culture that respects press freedom.
