Tinubu Defends Distribution of Palliatives, Blames Organizers for Stampedes, Says He’s Been Giving Them Out in Bourdillon for 25 Years Without Problems
President Bola Tinubu has attributed the recent tragic stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja to poor planning and mismanagement by the organizers of the palliative distribution events.
Speaking during a media chat in Lagos on Monday, the President expressed sorrow over the loss of lives, including children, and extended his condolences to the affected families. He emphasized that the unfortunate incidents could have been avoided with better organization.
President Tinubu highlighted his own experience, stating that he has been distributing palliatives, such as food and other essentials, from his Bourdillon residence in Lagos for over 25 years without any incidents of stampedes. He credited this to proper planning and disciplined execution.
“It is heartbreaking to hear about these incidents, especially the deaths of children in Oyo State and similar reports from other areas. While the intention to help is commendable, the lack of organization by some organizers has led to these tragedies,” he said.
The President advised those planning to distribute aid to ensure they have adequate resources and proper crowd management strategies. He also cautioned against publicizing such events if they lack the capacity to handle large crowds.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to be more disciplined and organized, reiterating that acts of goodwill must be accompanied by effective planning to prevent further loss of life.
