Reactions Trail Buhari’s Claim of Leaving Office With Same Assets He Had Before Presidency

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked public reactions following his statement that he left office with no personal wealth gains, maintaining the same physical assets he owned prior to becoming president. Speaking during a courtesy visit by All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at his Kaduna residence, Buhari emphasized the importance of integrity and service in leadership.
He urged current and aspiring leaders to focus on the welfare of the people rather than personal enrichment. “I left with the same physical assets I had before I became president,” Buhari said, reinforcing his belief in accountability and modesty in public service.
The former president also extended his appreciation to the Bola Tinubu-led administration for renovating his Kaduna home. While noting that the exterior remained unchanged, he acknowledged that significant work had been done inside. He expressed gratitude to the visiting governors, appreciating the camaraderie they shared during his time in office.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), spoke on behalf of the delegation. He commended Buhari for his instrumental role in forming the APC and for his enduring principles throughout his leadership.
Uzodinma praised Buhari’s legacy, noting key accomplishments in the areas of security, infrastructure, anti-corruption, and economic reforms. “He remains the only Nigerian to defeat an incumbent president and lead the nation through significant reforms,” Uzodinma said.
He further noted that Buhari’s support for President Tinubu represents a continuation of the party’s vision and values. The governors collectively acknowledged Buhari’s leadership as foundational to the APC’s current direction and urged him to continue providing guidance.
The former president’s remarks have stirred debate across social media, with supporters lauding his humility and critics questioning the claim. Nonetheless, the visit highlighted the APC’s effort to maintain unity and reflect on the contributions of past leaders as it charts its future course.
