NLC Calls for Action Following Helicopter Crash
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a thorough investigation into the recent Eastwind Aviation helicopter crash over the Bonny River, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two crew members, on October 24, 2024.The helicopter was on its way from the Port Harcourt Military Base to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN, located off the coast of Calabar, when the accident occurred.
In his statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed heartfelt condolences, acknowledging the sacrifices Nigerian workers make daily.Ajaero stressed the urgent need to reinforce health and safety protocols, especially for high-risk jobs in sectors like offshore oil and gas.
He pointed to weak enforcement of safety regulations, asserting that no worker should have to risk their life while on duty. The NLC has called for stricter adherence to safety protocols, reliable aircraft, clear communication systems, and enhanced search-and-rescue resources.
Ajaero highlighted, according to Vanguard, that the term “accident” should not excuse the responsibilities of agencies tasked with ensuring worker safety. The NLC extended its sympathies to the families and coworkers of the victims, particularly to members of NUPENG and NAAPE.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to improving workplace safety standards to help prevent such incidents in the future and to honor those lost in this tragedy.
