The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced that it is ramping up its search and rescue efforts following a tragic helicopter crash that occurred yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The helicopter, which was heading to an oil rig, vanished over the Bight of Benin around 2:00 PM, resulting in the deaths of eight people, including crew members.
Initially, reports indicated that the crash site was close to Uyo, which led NEMA’s Uyo Operation Office to deploy search teams to that area. However, with help from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the wreckage was eventually located near Bonny Island in Rivers State.
By 4:30 PM, the wreckage had been found, and three bodies were recovered. As of this afternoon, NEMA is working alongside the Nigerian Air Force in ongoing search and rescue operations to find the remaining five individuals who were on board the ill-fated helicopter and to retrieve their bodies from the sea, the agency stated on its official X account.
