Ijaw Women Reject Akwa Ibom Leadership in Rivers State, Criticize Wike’s Allegiances
In a video shared by SYMFONI, a group of Ijaw women strongly opposed the idea of an individual from Akwa Ibom governing Rivers State, expressing their dissatisfaction with former Governor Nyesom Wike’s political moves.
One of the women in the video passionately questioned Wike’s origins and loyalty, stating:
“Who made Wike? An Ijaw man made Wike, and today, does he have respect for President Jonathan? Bringing an Akwa-Ibom man to come and rule over Rivers State will not work, it will not work. Don’t touch me, it will not work.”
This statement reflects deep political tensions within the Ijaw community regarding leadership and representation in Rivers State.
Wike’s Relationship with the Ijaw Community
Over the years, there have been political frictions between Governor Wike and the Ijaw people. Despite this, attempts have been made to reconcile differences, especially between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
In June 2024, the Ijaw community initiated efforts to bridge the divide, aiming to foster peace and unity in the state.
The Ijaw Young Professionals Association also acknowledged Wike’s contributions to the Ijaw people, highlighting his appointment of Ijaw individuals to key positions during his tenure. They emphasized that Wike should not be viewed as an enemy of the Ijaw nation, given his past collaborations with Ijaw leaders.
Ijaw Women Stand Firm
The latest outcry from Ijaw women underscores ongoing concerns over external political influences in Rivers State governance and a perceived lack of recognition for the Ijaw community’s role in shaping the state’s leadership.
