IGP Kayode Egbetokun Calls for Caution in Palliative Distributions After Stampede Incidents
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, issued a stern warning on Saturday regarding the unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items during the festive period.
This caution comes in light of recent tragic stampedes that occurred in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The warning was conveyed through a statement from the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Egbetokun’s remarks follow a devastating incident that took place in Ibadan, where a stampede at a children’s fun fair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children, with many others sustaining critical injuries.
In Anambra State, a similar tragedy unfolded when at least 20 residents lost their lives during a rice distribution event aimed at assisting the less privileged.
Additionally, reports emerged of an unspecified number of fatalities during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja, further highlighting the dangers associated with poorly organized gatherings.
The IGP emphasized the inherent risks posed to public safety during such disorganized distributions and events organized by various groups, individuals, and non-governmental organizations.
He stated, “Such unorganized events could result in stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives.”
In response to these incidents, Egbetokun directed police commissioners in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations to facilitate necessary legal actions.
He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to those injured in the unfortunate events.
