First Igbo Chief Imam of National Mosque, Tochukwu Usman, Expresses Pride in Igbo Heritage and Culture
Professor Iliyasu Tochukwu Usman, the first Igbo Muslim appointed as Chief Imam of the National Mosque in Abuja, has expressed pride in his Igbo origins and culture while emphasizing the compatibility of certain cultural practices with Islamic teachings.
Speaking during the unveiling of National Mosque Imams by the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, Usman highlighted the importance of distinguishing positive cultural values from those at odds with religious principles.
He noted that while some Igbo traditions, like communal support and being one’s brother’s keeper, align with Islamic teachings, others, such as idol worship or alcohol consumption during festivals, conflict with his faith.
“I embrace the good in Igbo culture, such as communal relationships and mutual assistance, which reflect the values of my religion. However, I reject practices like idol worship and alcoholism, which are prohibited in Islam,” Usman said.
Professor Oloyede added that the NSCIA has always prioritized character and scholarship in appointing leaders for the National Mosque, underscoring the inclusivity of Islam. He highlighted that two Imams from the South East and South-South regions were appointed, demonstrating that merit remains the guiding criterion for such positions.
