Okpebholo Warns Convicted Kidnappers, Announces Plan for Special Court in Edo

Monday Okpebholo has announced plans to establish a special court to expedite the prosecution of kidnapping and cultism cases in Edo State, while warning that convicted offenders could face capital punishment in accordance with the law.
The governor made the remarks while addressing journalists during the parade of suspected kidnappers arrested by the Edo State Police Command.
According to Okpebholo, the proposed court is intended to fast-track trials involving kidnapping and cult-related offences. He stated that his administration is committed to strengthening efforts to combat violent crime and improve security across the state.
The governor also recounted a recent kidnapping incident in Benin City, saying he directed security agencies to apprehend those responsible. He said the operation led to the arrest of several suspects, while one suspect reportedly died during an exchange of gunfire and two others remain at large.
Okpebholo commended the police, military, and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their role in tackling insecurity, noting that security agencies have intensified operations against kidnapping and other violent crimes.
He further warned individuals involved in kidnapping or those providing support to criminal groups that security agencies would continue efforts to identify and prosecute offenders.
Kidnapping for ransom remains a major security challenge in Nigeria, with criminal groups targeting travellers, students, farmers, and residents in various parts of the country.
