Bisi Alimi Criticizes Photo of Pastor Adeboye in ‘Military Attire’

Nigerian LGBTQ+ activist Bisi Alimi has reacted strongly to a viral photo of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), dressed in a regalia resembling a Navy uniform.

In a series of posts, Alimi criticized the cleric and his wife for wearing the attire during a church event, questioning if Adeboye had served in the military. He pointed out the double standards in Nigeria, where civilians are often punished for wearing camouflage, while Adeboye’s status as a religious leader seemingly exempts him from such scrutiny.

Alimi cited Nigeria’s Criminal Code Act, which prohibits civilians from wearing military uniforms without proper authorization, to emphasize the illegality of such actions. He argued that the law is often applied unfairly, favoring the wealthy or influential over ordinary Nigerians who face fines or imprisonment for similar offenses.

“This is the hypocrisy of Nigeria,” Alimi wrote, calling attention to what he sees as unequal enforcement of the law and questioning the legitimacy of the medals displayed on the cleric’s attire.

Alimi’s comments sparked widespread discussions online, with many weighing in on the appropriateness of the attire and the broader implications of selective justice in Nigeria.
