Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., known professionally as Shatta Wale, is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. He was born on October 17, 1984, in Accra, Ghana.
Shatta Wale began his music career under the stage name Bandana and gained early recognition with the hit single Moko Hoo in the early 2000s. After a period away from the spotlight, he rebranded as Shatta Wale and made a remarkable comeback in 2013 with the release of Dancehall King, a song that re-established him as one of Africa’s leading dancehall artists.
Known for his energetic performances and prolific output, Shatta Wale has become one of Ghana’s most influential contemporary musicians. His music blends dancehall, reggae, Afrobeats, and hip-hop, earning him a large fanbase across Africa and beyond. He has released numerous successful projects and hit songs including My Level, Ayoo, Taking Over, and On God.
In 2021, Shatta Wale gained international attention after appearing on Already, a song from Beyoncé’s Grammy-winning project The Lion King: The Gift. Beyond music, he is the founder of Shatta Movement Records (SM4LYF), a label and movement that has played a significant role in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful dancehall musicians, Shatta Wale has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career.
