King Promise
Gregory Bortey Newman, professionally known as King Promise, is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and performer. He was born on August 16, 1995, in Nungua, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Renowned for his smooth vocals and melodic songwriting, he has emerged as one of the leading voices of contemporary African music, blending Afrobeats, Highlife, R&B, and Afro-fusion.
King Promise developed an interest in music at an early age, drawing inspiration from his father’s diverse record collection, which included Highlife, reggae, soul, and R&B. He studied Business Administration (Marketing) at Central University, Ghana, graduating in 2016 before fully pursuing a professional music career.
He gained mainstream recognition in 2016 with the single Thank God, featuring Fuse ODG, and further expanded his audience through songs such as CCTV, Selfish, and Tokyo. His debut studio album, As Promised (2019), established him as one of Ghana’s fastest-rising artists, while his sophomore album 5 Star (2022) showcased collaborations with leading African and international acts.
King Promise achieved global success in 2023 with the viral hit Terminator, which became one of Africa’s biggest crossover records and significantly expanded his international profile. He followed this success with his third studio album, True To Self (2024), which received critical acclaim and earned several major awards. In 2026, he collaborated with Nigerian singer Mr Eazi on the joint album See What We’ve Done, further strengthening his presence across the African and global music markets.
Known for his polished artistry, versatility, and international appeal, King Promise is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Ghana’s new generation of Afrobeats and Highlife musicians.
