President Tinubu Returns To Nigeria After Nearly Two Weeks Abroad, Amid Criticism And High Expectations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria on Monday, April 21, 2025, after spending close to two weeks on a working visit to Europe. His arrival was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via social media, putting an end to growing speculation about his prolonged absence.

According to PUNCH, the Presidency explained that the trip was a pre-planned working engagement, allowing the President to evaluate his administration’s mid-term progress and strategize on upcoming policy decisions. While in Paris and London, Tinubu reportedly stayed connected with his cabinet, giving directives on key national issues, especially the worsening security situation in parts of the country.

Despite those reassurances, the President’s extended stay abroad drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders and civil society organizations. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Tinubu’s absence during a time of national crisis as “neglect,” particularly as communities in Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, and Borno States were being rocked by deadly attacks. Labour Party’s Peter Obi also voiced concern, urging the President to return and take swift action to address the growing insecurity.

In defense of the trip, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) maintained that the President’s absence did not hinder governance. APC spokesperson Bala Ibrahim stated that, “Governance was not interrupted,” noting that Vice President Kashim Shettima effectively managed affairs in Tinubu’s absence and that the President remained actively in charge from abroad.

With Tinubu now back on Nigerian soil, attention turns to how swiftly and decisively his administration will act, especially in tackling the wave of violence plaguing several regions. Many Nigerians are eager to see meaningful responses and strong leadership in the face of mounting national challenges.
