National Power Grid Experiences Another Collapse During TCN’s Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Nigeria’s national power grid experienced another collapse today, November 8, continuing a troubling pattern of disruptions that have affected the country’s electricity supply.
The most recent collapse occurred around 11:29 AM on Thursday, following a disturbance the day before. According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the incident was triggered by an unexpected frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz. TCN had previously acknowledged the weaknesses in the transmission system and had begun efforts to address these issues, including technical upgrades and interventions based on a recent investigative report.
This collapse marks the second within 24 hours, adding to a growing list of grid failures, with at least eight reported so far this year. These ongoing power outages have raised significant concerns about the broader impact on Nigeria’s economy and public infrastructure.
In response to the frequent grid failures, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has proposed a new approach to infrastructure financing. He suggested reviewing the financial, legal, and regulatory environment to attract private investments in the power sector.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, described the recurrent grid failures as a national disgrace, calling it a clear reflection of leadership and policy failures in the country. He criticized the system for failing to provide a critical necessity for a productive society.
