Datti To Atiku: Step Aside In 2027 And Embrace Your Role As An Elder Statesman

Garba Datti Muhammad, the National Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Instead of launching yet another campaign, Datti urged Atiku to fully embrace the role of a respected elder statesman.

As reported by Daily Post on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Datti pointed to the example of former Vice President Muhammad Namadi Sambo, who, after leaving office in 2015, stepped away from the political spotlight and has since contributed quietly from behind the scenes. Datti suggested that Atiku follow a similar path.

In a letter addressed to the former PDP presidential candidate, Datti referenced Atiku’s numerous attempts to clinch the presidency, dating as far back as 1993. With the 2027 elections on the horizon and Atiku turning 80 by then, Datti questioned the wisdom of pursuing another campaign.

“It is better you drop the idea of contesting for president in 2027, by which time you would have already turned 80 years,” Datti stated.

He continued, “Wazirin Adamawa, you should rather remain the elder statesman that you currently are. Methinks you shouldn’t waste your time and resources. At least, you should take your cue from another former Vice President, Arc. Muhammad Namadi Sambo, who has been operating in the background and remains an elder statesman since he left office in 2015.”

Datti also expressed concern over Atiku’s reported political strategy, noting speculation that the former VP might be considering forming a coalition with disaffected politicians should the PDP deny him another shot at the presidential ticket.

He warned that such a move would not reflect well on a figure of Atiku’s standing, and instead encouraged him to focus on preserving his legacy and using his influence to support national development from a non-partisan position.

With this message, Datti called for a generational shift in leadership, while recognizing Atiku’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.
