What Babangida Did For Us In June 1993 Is What Yakubu Has Done For Us At This Time – Pa Adebanjo
Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has said that what General Ibrahim Babangida did to Nigerians in the June 1993 election is what the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has done to Nigerians now. Pa Adebanjo said this when he appeared on Arise News.
In the report which was also carried by Sahara Reporters, Pa Adebanjo said that the battle for democracy will continue until the votes of the voters count, and the people enjoy the fruits of their votes.
He said that Abiola was not a fan of Afenifere, which was NADECO then, and did not belong to their party, but they had to support him because he won the June 1993 election.
He added – “But because he (Abiola) won the election free and fair, we supported him, but what Babangida did for us at that time is what Mahmood has done for us at this time.
That is why I said we have not learnt a lesson; you allow votes to count, let the voters’ votes count and that’s why we are seeing this trouble. That’s why I said, the battle continues until you allow votes to count and the electorate to enjoy the fruits of their votes.”
Below is a screenshot of the report from Sahara Reporters:
Nigerians celebrated Democracy Day yesterday Monday June 12, a day which commemorates the June 12, 1993, election which was believed to have been won by the late M. K. O Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but which was later annulled by the military.
