Edo Commissioner Dismisses Peter Obi as a Political Threat Ahead of 2027 Elections
Benin City — Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, has dismissed concerns over Labour Party figure Peter Obi, stating that the former Anambra State governor poses no significant threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Channels Television on July 21, 2025, Ohonbamu said, “Peter Obi is the least of our worries. APC can’t be threatened because of Peter Obi.” His comments come amid rising political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition leaders, including Obi, beginning early mobilization efforts.
Ohonbamu asserted that the APC remains strong, citing its national structure, leadership cohesion, and record in governance. He described the Labour Party’s performance in the 2023 elections as temporary, stating, “The Labour Party’s momentum in 2023 was a flash in the pan. Nigerians have since seen the difference between populism and governance.”
Reactions to the remarks have been mixed. While APC supporters echoed Ohonbamu’s stance, members of the Labour Party and supporters of Obi criticized the commissioner’s statement. A spokesperson for Peter Obi responded, saying, “We are not interested in trading words. The people know who is speaking for them and who is not.”
Analysts suggest that while the APC maintains confidence, renewed mobilisation by opposition groups, particularly in southern and central regions, could impact the political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
