Dele Momodu Recalls MKO Abiola’s Generosity Ahead of His Wedding
Renowned journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, has shared a memorable encounter with the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, revealing how the billionaire businessman supported him ahead of his wedding in 1992.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast by Glitch Africa Studios, Momodu recounted how he left his job to join Abiola’s presidential campaign. According to him, just a month after his wedding, Abiola officially declared his intention to run for the presidency. Momodu stated that he felt it was impossible for Abiola to contest without his involvement, so he fully dedicated himself to the campaign.
Reflecting on his wedding, Momodu revealed that Abiola personally drove to Ijebu-Igbo in December 1992 to attend the ceremony. He further disclosed that just a week before the wedding, Abiola gifted him ₦50,000, an amount he said was equivalent to $50,000 at the time.
In his words:
“During my wedding, Abiola drove all the way to Ijebu-Igbo in December 1992, and the week before the wedding, he gave me fifty thousand naira, which at that time was like fifty thousand dollars.”
Momodu’s revelation highlights the deep personal relationship he shared with Abiola and the financial strength of the naira in the early ’90s. His story also sheds light on Abiola’s generosity and commitment to those who supported him.
