Amaechi: I Opposed Goodluck Jonathan Because I Disagreed With His Leadership Style

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up about his reasons for opposing former President Goodluck Jonathan. Speaking at a political gathering in Port Harcourt on Friday, Amaechi explained that his stance against Jonathan was not personal but was based on a strong disagreement with the former president’s approach to leadership.
“The reason for removing Goodluck was that I didn’t agree with his style,” Amaechi said.
He further stated that his opposition stemmed from a belief that Nigeria needed stronger leadership, greater transparency, and more accountability, which he felt Jonathan’s administration lacked. “I believed Nigeria deserved stronger leadership, transparency, and accountability, and at that time, I didn’t see those qualities reflected in President Jonathan’s administration,” he added.
Amaechi, who was instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the 2015 political movement that unseated Jonathan, recalled the significant political risks he took during that time. He noted that although he understood the dangers, he felt it was necessary to act for the good of the country.
His comments have reignited discussions around past leadership changes in Nigeria, with some praising his courage while others argue that the political rifts from that period still influence the nation’s current political environment.
Analysts believe Amaechi’s remarks could be part of a broader strategy to maintain political relevance ahead of future elections, although the full impact of his statements on the evolving political scene remains uncertain.
