Yunusa Tanko – Obi Vs Tinubu: Why LP Is Confident Of Getting Favorable Judgment At Election Tribunal
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has spoken out in the final days before the much-anticipated legal battle between Peter Gregory Obi and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the outcome of the contentious presidential election held on February 25th.
The Labour Party is confident that the courts will rule in favour of its candidate.
Tanko, the official spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, said in an interview with media personality Olawale Oluwade on Friday night that the grounds upon which Obi’s election petition was filed are so strong that it would be difficult for the Tribunal to deliver judgement based on technicalities rather than on the dictates of the Nigerian Constitution.
‘We are confident of winning because we are democrats, a strong one at that,’ he said. The rule of law is fundamental to a democratic society, as is often understood. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have already established this rule of law. We are now requesting a review of this very rule of law by the Judicial Branch. We don’t want them to focus on procedural details but on the meat of the case instead.
To run for office in the United States, one must, at the very least, produce proof of having completed elementary school. Candidate who was ultimately declared the victor in the presidential election did not present this. Additionally, this candidate did not receive the required 25% of the vote in the FCT as mandated by the Constitution. Therefore, we have put the judiciary to the test in a constitutional sense. They need to consider how to “construct a new Nigeria in which the rule of law predominates.”
