Man Who Urged Tinubu to Resign Admitted to Psychiatric Hospital
The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed that Abdullahi Mohammed, a 30-year-old man who climbed a 33kv high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa, has been admitted to Yola Psychiatric Hospital for mental evaluation.
Speaking with Arewa PUNCH, Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Nguroje explained that Mohammed is currently undergoing psychiatric tests at the specialist hospital in Yola.
Nguroje stated, “When officers from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed from the high-tension pole, they found hard drugs on him, including what he admitted was Indian hemp.”
He added, “The suspect confessed to regularly using Indian hemp and other drugs. His behavior was erratic, prompting us to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a thorough evaluation. We’re awaiting the results before deciding on further actions.”
Mohammed was rescued and arrested by the Adamawa Police last Saturday after scaling the 33kv pole at Mayo-Belwa Local Government Headquarters, demanding President Bola Tinubu’s resignation before he would descend.
The police spokesperson noted that Mohammed’s act was seen as a suicide attempt, a criminal offense under Nigerian law. “Attempting suicide is illegal under our Constitution, and we intend to charge him in court.”
Nguroje emphasized the police’s responsibility to protect lives, stating that those attempting to harm themselves will face legal consequences.
On the morning of the incident, which coincided with Mayo-Belwa’s market day, Mohammed climbed the high-tension pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, refusing to come down until the Nigerian President stepped down.
Arewa PUNCH learned that local residents helped the police negotiate with Mohammed, eventually convincing him to come down on Saturday night.
Mohammed hails from Gashaka town in Taraba State.
