Lagos Issues Warning on Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding
The Lagos State Government has issued an early warning to residents about the likelihood of above-average rainfall during the first peak of the 2025 rainy season, with a delayed end extending into December.
At a Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) briefing in Alausa, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed that the rainy season would be longer than usual, starting in late March and continuing until early December. He shared that the forecast predicts an annual rainfall of 1,936mm, which is higher than the long-term average for 1991–2020.
This forecast is based on the neutral phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), expected to persist for the first six to eight months of the year. Wahab explained that areas such as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe, along with neighbouring Ogun State, will experience increased rainfall. For example, Ikeja is expected to see its first rains on April 2 and its last rains on December 2, accumulating 1,900mm, while Badagry will receive 1,978mm with rains starting on March 30 and ending on December 4.
The commissioner also warned of the risks of flash floods in low-lying areas, especially due to the large amount of rainfall, as well as strong winds at the beginning and end of the season, which could disrupt commercial activities, cause flight delays, and result in economic losses.
In response to these concerns, Wahab assured that the government is enhancing flood control efforts to minimize the impact of the anticipated rains. He also emphasized the importance of the government’s ongoing collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to provide early warnings and support climate adaptation.
Lagosians were urged to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to protect their lives and properties as the city prepares for an intense rainy season.
