Mercy Aigbe Honors Late Father by Acting in Bini Language Film
Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has revealed that her recent role in the film My Mother Is A Witch was a tribute to her late father, who had long hoped to see her act in her native Bini language.
In a video interview shared by Pulse Nigeria, Aigbe explained that the opportunity to perform in Bini was deeply personal. “I’m Benin but I was born and raised in Lagos. It took me back to when I started my journey in Nollywood, and my father always saying, ‘Why are you even doing films? You’re not even a Bini girl,’” she said.
She noted that her father, who did not speak Yoruba fluently, had difficulty understanding her past roles. “He didn’t really speak Yoruba and he didn’t understand very well. So he wanted his child to actually act in movies that he can watch and understand,” she added.
Aigbe described the role as a fulfilling experience that allowed her to connect with her cultural roots and fulfill her father’s longstanding wish. “So when I got the script, my father will be proud,” she stated.
